Busted! Don't Believe These Screen and Digital Printing Myths!

The printing industry has been around for hundreds of years and has had to successfully adapt to changes in technology. As technology has changed, the printing industry has become susceptible to myths, rumors, and misconceptions which, over a period of time,are eventually accepted as the truth.

1. Screen printing is obsolete.
I have had a supplier come in twice a year and inform me that the screen printing industry will be obsolete soon. It's been about ten years now and screen printing still comprises over seventy percent of our business. Size, quantity and the number of colors can determine which part of our shop will produce a job and digital is not always the best option. Five hundred decals or signs printed in one or two colors may be cheapest if screen printed. Also, a large part of our business involves printing directly onto various metal and plastic panels that simply can't be printed digitally. Screen printing can also be done with superior inks that stand up to adverse conditions outdoors and underground in mines. With so many screen printing shops converting to digital technology, Novatex Graphics is almost the only local option for this process.

2. Screen printing is an inferior print product.
People believe that screen printing results in an inferior product since it's based on really old technology. This is not true. In fact, for decals or signs printed in spot colors, screen printing results in denser, longer lasting colors - and without the need for lamination. Pantone matching is also simpler and more accurate with screen printing inks. 

3. I only need one, so I'll go elsewhere. 
These days, this number isn't the barrier it used to be - even in a screen printing shop. We can't ignore the digital world completely so we have taken steps to enhance our product lines. Our large format digital printer can handle large signs and small orders of decals. We purchased a small flatbed printer to print small orders of lexan labels or to direct print onto mugs, photo frames, golf balls, and so on.
